Boosting Your Immunity for Back to School Germs

It’s that time of year again…back to school time!

As the summer days and weekends are quickly disappearing, parents and kids are busy going back to school shopping for that perfect first-day outfit, and of course all those school supplies.  Even if your kids love school, the end of summer is always hard and full of mixed emotions.  After two full months of seeing friends and family, vacations, later bedtimes, sleeping in and spending countless hours outside in the sun, it’s back to reality and routine.

Getting back into a schedule can be hard the first couple weeks back which sometimes means lack of sleep, which ultimately means our kid’s immune systems aren’t as effective.  September is also the start of the dreaded cold and flu season which has a lot to do with our kids being exposed to all those germs at school, but there are natural ways to prevent your family from getting sick and supporting our kids during this transition.  How and what can we do to aid in restful sleep and build up their immunity to all those germs they’re exposed to?

Essential oils to the rescue!

These powerful little bottles of oil are all-natural and can be used in a number of ways to help keep you and your family healthy.  Here are some ways to use essential oils to give your immune systems a boost this fall; diffusing an immunity blend, making rollers to use on the whole family and using an oil-infused all-purpose cleaner to clean all surfaces at home.

Diffusing oils at home is one of the easiest ways to create not only a pleasant atmosphere and scent in your house, but it also offers so many other wonderful benefits.  Each oil has its own unique qualities, and blending the right ones can provide you with a powerful tool to calm down crazy kids, cleanse the air and even give your family the immunity boost needed at this time of year.  Today we’re focusing on how we can use oils to help keep our family healthy, here are some diffusing blends that will do just that.

Immunity Boosting Blend

  • 3 drops Lemon
  • 3 drops Lavender
  • 3 drops Peppermint

Wellness Blend

  • 2 drops Cinnamon Bark
  • 2 drops Clove
  • 2 drops Eucalyptus
  • 2 drops Rosemary
  • 2 drops Orange

Thieves Blend

  • 8 drops Clove
  • 7 drops Lemon
  • 4 drops Cinnamon Bark
  • 4 drops Tea Tree
  • 3 drops Eucalyptus
  • 2 drops Rosemary

Some of you may not be familiar with Thieves oil, some essential oil lines carry a premade Thieves blend but it’s also very easy to make your own by simply combining the key ingredients that make up this powerful blend.  Thieves is a game-changer when it comes to immune support due to it’s proven antimicrobial properties.  Thieves is an essential oil blend based on a story from the 15th Century.  During the bubonic plague in Europe and Asia, a group of four thieves from Europe who were known for robbing the victims of this sickness were finally captured.  In exchange for a lesser sentence the men turned over their homemade concoction that had been protecting them from the illness, you guessed it, a combination of all the oils that make up the blend that we now know as Thieves oil.  That’s why you’ll find the oils that makeup Thieves oil in all the immunity-boosting recipes.

Night-time routines are so beneficial when it comes to a restful night’s sleep, especially for our kids.  Including essential oils into your nightly bedtime rituals is such a helpful way to create a calm and relaxed environment.  Getting a good night’s sleep is so important, not only for our general health but for our immune systems too.  We find that lack of sleep when we’ve already got symptoms of a bug coming on, typically means a full-blown cold is inevitable. Here is our nighttime routine and how we prepare for a good night’s sleep:

1.     Diffuse: We have diffusers in all the bedrooms and always have a sleep blend going that consists of Cedarwood, Lavender, Bergamot and Frankincense.

Sleep Blend

  • 3 drops Cedarwood
  • 3 drops Lavender
  • 3 drops Frankincense
  • 2 drops Bergamot

2.     Spritz: We spray our linens with sweet dreams linen spray that is just a mixture of distilled water and Lavender essential oil.

3.     Roll-on: We use a roller made up of Lavender, Cedarwood and Orange essential oil and topped off with fractioned coconut oil.  This is rolled on our temples, back of neck, feet and inner wrists.  The smell of this roller is heavenly.  We love inhaling it deeply after we apply it to our wrists.

As we mentioned earlier, using rollers on the whole family is another great immune-boosting practice.  The rareEssence line at Anna’s offers a Defense line that includes a premade oil blend for diffusing, an inhaler and a premade roll-on.  All of these products feature eucalyptus, tea tree and clove oil and boost your body’s natural defences.  The Defense inhaler and roll-on are only to be used by adults (18+ years).  We find that keeping the inhaler and roll on in our purse is the perfect way to always have them handy, and makes re-applying and re-using throughout the day that much easier.  With our kids coming home with these extra germs, it’s important that we keep our health and immune system in tip-top shape so we don’t get hit with a nasty cold or flu.  Since these products aren’t recommended for children we’ve included a great roller recipe that you can make and use on your kids.  Incorporating these rollers into your morning routine is the perfect way to make sure your little loves are getting all the immune support they can get while they’re exposed to all those extra germs.

Kids Immunity Roller Recipe

Drop essential oils into a 10ml glass roller bottle and fill the remainder of the bottle with fractioned coconut oil (carrier oil).
  • 3 drops lemon oil
  • 3 drops Frankincense
  • 1 drop oregano
  • 1 drop cinnamon bark
  • 1 drop clove
  • 1 drop rosemary
Staying on top of our daily house cleaning is extra important this time of year.  Taking the time to wipe down surfaces and door handles with this DIY all-purpose cleaner will help stop the spread of germs and it will have your house smelling like Fall.

DIY All-Purpose Cleaner

In a 16oz. glass spray bottle, add essential oils and then fill the rest of the bottle with water.
  • 20 drops Lemon
  • 10 drops Clove
  • 5 drops Cinnamon
  • 5 drops Rosemary
  • 5 drops Tea Tree
Making sure your kids are sanitizing their hands or washing them as soon as they get home from school is a great practice to get into.  This will also help prevent germs from spreading throughout your house too.  There are so many easy steps that you can take to keep your whole family healthy.  Stop in and grab all the essential oils you need to boost your family’s immune system and have everyone asking you for advice on how to avoid the cold and flu.
