Ficus Elastica: The Rubber Plant

Ficus Elastica: The Rubber Plant

Stay ahead of interior design trends with the perfect statement houseplant, Ficus Elastica also referred to as the Rubber plant. This easy to care for indoor plant is known for its burgundy-coloured leaves and crimson new leaf casings.

When it comes to caring for your Rubber Plant, the key is a balance- just the right amount of sun and water. Known to thrive in bright indirect sunlight, these plants do best in a sunny spot shielded by a sheer curtain. Rubber plants prefer temperatures between 16-23 degrees Celsius; however, they can survive temperatures as low as 10 degrees Celsius. Rubber plants are sensitive to temperature changes and will do best living in areas with consistent humidity and temperature. Try to avoid placing your Rubber Plant near an air vent as it may drop leaves with the constant cool/warm airflow.

Rubber Plants will require more water in their growing season – Summer months. This is when you should be keeping the soil moist, but not drowning the plant. Be sure to let the soil dry out between waterings to avoid drowning. We also recommend that you wipe off the leaves of your plant with a damp cloth or spritz it with water- this not only removes dust but also allows the plant cells to receive more light to photosynthesize (process energy) faster. If you start to notice your leaves turning yellow and brown and falling off, this is a sign of too much water.

If you pay attention to your Rubber Plant’s needs and ensure a happy balance of the light and the moisture of the soil, they can grow anywhere from 6-10 feet tall! This beautiful, glossy-leafed plant is a great houseplant option for any home!
