If you have ever had trouble caring for one of your houseplants, know that you are not alone! Each house plant is unique and requires a different level of care. Here are five tips for keeping indoor plants healthy.
Watering
Regular watering is essential for the health of your plants. Some plants need more water than others, so it’s a good idea to check on your plants weekly. To check the moisture level in your pot, check the top 2 inches of the soil with your finger. Over time you will learn how much water your plant needs and will be able to develop a watering schedule. In the summer months, I check my fiddle leaf figs every 7 days, but I have found that in the winter months they require water every 10 days.
Dusting
Dusting your leaves is very important! Not only does it make your plant look sad when the leaves are covered in dust, but it blocks out the sunlight which impacts its growth. Dusting plant leaves will give them a healthy shine and promote optimal growth.
Potting
Potting is so important because some plants must have drainage for that excess water to go to avoid root rot and some plants need very little watering and can handle a pot without drainage. It is important to know what kind of pot your plant requires. You should check your plants monthly to see if the roots are showing and they’re due to be repotted.
Fertilizing
Fertilizing is very important especially during the growing season (spring and summer). This is when your plant will do most of its growing for the year, and fertilizer provides the nutrients needed for this new growth. It’s a good idea to do some research to find out the type and quantity of fertilizer your plant needs to thrive. This way you don’t over-fertilize and burn the roots of the plant. Some plants, like cactus and orchids, require their own special fertilizer.
Sunlight
While every plant needs sunlight, different plants have different sunlight needs. Some plants like bright light, while some like indirect light. Others, such as the snake plant, can handle low light. Did you know some of your plants can get a sunburn? In the past I made the mistake of putting my fiddle leaf fig in direct sunlight thinking it would help it grow faster – and instead I ended up with a lot of sunburnt leaves!
I like to set a plant check reminder on my phone to ensure that my plants are checked weekly. Pick a day of the week that is easiest for you and dedicate it to plant care. It will only take a couple of minutes, and it will ensure your plants provide your home with warmth and life for years to come!
