The Tree
Decorating a tree is made much easier if you start with the perfect tree! This will help your overall look when you have completed decorating it, whether you go with a real or an artificial tree. You want to make sure that your tree is the right size for your space – if you have 8-foot ceilings a 7-foot tree will work best; 9-foot ceilings require an 8-foot tree. You want to make sure you have space for the tree topper!
The Garland
Sometimes, you can forget about the garland but it is the second most important part of decorating your tree after the lights are on. Adding the garland will tie your whole tree together from the top to the bottom. Whether you are using chunky wood beads, ribbon or glittery pearls they will be the essence of your tree, helping tie your whole theme together. For added style and interest, you can mix two different garlands for texture and dimension!
The Ribbon
When adding ribbon throughout your tree, cut your ribbon into 24″ strips, tying a wire in the middle, cutting both ends like a triangle, then wiring them onto the tree. This will give the look of ribbon without having to fiddle with one long piece. This will make the tree fuller and hide gaps in your tree.
The Ornaments
When adding ornaments try and find some that are the same colour or texture or theme to mix throughout the tree. It’s a good idea to keep them around 12” apart – this will help them from looking too cluttered. Spacing them throughout the tree will give it a more uniform look; you can also do this with ribbon. This will help define your tree.
The next important part of decorating with ornaments is to decide how many ornaments to place on the tree. This can be a tricky decision because not all ornaments are the same. I try to place 10 ornaments per foot of the tree. If you have a 7-foot tree decorate with 70 ornaments, 8 foot gets 80…..and so on. You can do more or less if you’re feeling the tree looks too cluttered depending on the size of the ornaments. It’s a good idea to step back and look to check the overall look.
The Bottom
Now that you have a colour scheme you can match it with a tree skirt, tree collar or even adding some beautifully wrapped packages to make it look more festive.
