Swiss Cheese Plant

Swiss Cheese Plant

With huge, heart-shaped leaves that develop character and holes as the plant ages, the Swiss Cheese plant is considered a staple in the houseplant world. Known for its fast growth rate and vining habit, this easy to care for plant makes for a great statement in a bedroom or living room!

With origins in Central and South America, the Swiss Cheese plant has aerial roots growing downward from the stem, which brace against the ground or any available support. When growing as a houseplant you will want to insert a stake in the center of the pot, to stimulate that of a tree it would climb in its natural habitat. Perhaps you want to add some interest to a shelf instead, the Swiss Cheese plant can also offer fun texture and colour when trained to trail.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SWISS CHEESE PLANT:

  • Light: Bright indirect light
  • Growth: 60′ with proper support
  • Soil: Peat-based potting soil in a pot with a large drain hole
  • Water: When the soil is nearly dry, it is time to water. Don’t allow the soil to dry out completely and don’t allow it to be soggy. Misting the plant frequently as well is ideal.
  • Temperature & Humidity: thrive on high humidity. Lots of moisture and high temperatures- similar to that of the jungle is ideal! A sunroom, conservatory or greenhouse are ideal! Kitchens or bathrooms that provide bright indirect light will also work! Ensure that temperatures stay above 60°F.
  • Fertilizer: During summer and spring months using general-purpose houseplant fertilizer.
  • Maintenance: Trim the vines as needed if they start to look scraggly to encourage new growth.
