With Father's Day right around the corner and lots of summer plans filling up the calendar, we had to tell you about one of our favourite salty snacks! Perfect as a snack to bring to the baseball diamond or to put out for family game night – we’re excited to share the story behind Picard’s Peanuts!
Known for their fresh-roasted peanuts and specialty products, the Picard’s family introduced peanuts to Ontario’s sandy soils in 1979, as a small family farming business.
Home of the Canadian peanuts, Picard’s is owned and operated by the remaining Picard family members, John & sister Renee, who have been a part of the business since the beginning.
For more than three decades, visitors have travelled from miles around for their offerings! With six locations in Southwestern Ontario – they’ve quickly become very well known for their salty snacks!
Processing over half a million pounds of quality jumbo cocktail, extra fancy Virginia, Spanish, Ontario-grown Valencia peanuts and other specialty nuts each year!
The team at Picards plants the seeds in May and by June they see small yellow flowers. Peanuts then start to grow from the pollinated flowers above the ground attached to the pegs that penetrate the soil and form the peanut underground.
In late September, plants are dug up and left in the sun to dry. Combines then pick up the sun-dried peanuts and remove them from their vines. Peanuts are then washed, sorted and placed in wagons to be dried for storage. When completely dry the peanuts are graded and placed in cold storage until they are ready to be processed. The peanuts are roasted weekly to deliver the freshest taste in every bite.
