Mood Boosters to Lift Your Spirits on a Bad Day

Mood Boosters to Lift Your Spirits on a Bad Day

Soft wool throw blanket $89.99Mug $19.99

Fake summer arrived with a bang! She gave us ample doses of that glorious vitamin D that we’ve all been craving. Many of us began our yard work, brought out the outdoor furniture, and even unpacked our summer clothes.  I think in our heart of hearts, we all knew it wouldn’t last – this is Ontario after all. But gosh, we sure were hopeful. So, it’s only natural to feel a little let down. A little disappointed that we took the bait, only to land back here, in cool winter temperatures. It’s funny how affected we are by the weather, isn’t it?!

But this is temporary. The sun will shine again! And, in the meantime, there are plenty of habits and actions we can do to cheers ourselves up!
For me, generally, there are 5 actions that I need to do in a day to feel good about myself:
  • Move my body.
  • Write.
  • Be of service to others.
  • Eat good food.
  • Meditate or take some time to myself.
If I’ve had a lousy day and reflect back on it, almost 100% of the time, something from this list has been left out. Everyone’s list is different. We all don’t run off of the same fuel. But one thing is for sure – happiness is a practice. It’s not something we’re just born with. Which is actually great news because that means it’s something we can control!

So, if the weather, or anything else has you feeling down, I’ve compiled a list of small actions that just may help you find your happy place!

GET OFF YOUR DARN PHONE!
You know the old philosophy: “If a tree falls in the woods, and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?” I feel like, shamefully, that viewpoint can be applied to many of our social lives: “If a fun time happens, and no one posted a picture, was it really fun?” By now, it’s no secret that screens are addictive, and that too much of them actually do more harm than good. Let’s stop posting and comparing and do more living in the moment!

DANCE
Home alone and feeling blue? Crank your favourite song and dance like no ones watching! If this is not something you’re used to practicing, it can be uncomfortable at first, but trust me when I say, by the end of the song, you will feel like a million bucks! Whether it’s with the broom while you’re cleaning or twerking in the shower. Gettin' jiggy wit it is bound to lift your spirits!
REACH OUT TO AN OLD FRIEND
Be it through phone call, text or snail mail – reminiscing and catching up with a pal you haven’t seen in a while is always a pick me up!

Greeting card $6.99

MAKE YOURSELF A DELICIOUS MEAL
Often, if I’m home alone, I don’t bother cooking for myself – I just grab something processed or easy. And guess what? I feel like garbage afterward. We’re all deserving of good food! Taking the time to make something that you’re proud of to fuel your body is a worthwhile practice. And if you aren’t so great in the kitchen (like me!) a healthy raw snack will foot the bill!
Produce - prices vary
HAVE AN AT HOME SPA TREATMENT
Taking the time to pamper ourselves can be so rewarding. Sometimes, on a down day a little TLC is just what the doctor ordered! And the process can vary depending on how much time you are able to commit. Some mornings, a little invigorating shower spray does the trick to jump start the day! Or other times, a soothing facemask or pedicure before bed is the perfect way to soothe the soul.
WRITE A GRATITUDE LIST
Comparing is in our nature. It’s only human to want more than what we have. Gratitude can keep us from feeling less than, especially on bad days. Even if it’s the last thing I want to do, creating a little list of what I’m thankful for can help to set me straight on days when it seems everything is going wrong. This is definitely a great way to pull you out of tunnel vision and into seeing the bigger picture.

ENJOY A CUP OF TEA

I’ll admit, I’m a coffee lover through and through. To be honest, I’ve never really cared for tea. But as I get older, coffee isn’t something I can enjoy later in the afternoon. And sometimes, especially when the weather is yucky, a hot cuppa is just what is needed in the evening! Queue tea into the equation! Turns out, I really enjoy a hot cup of green tea with lemon and honey. Did you know that green tea has mood-enhancing brain chemicals including GABA, dopamine and serotonin? Sounds like a win to me!
REST
I’m not sure that this one needs an explanation! But perhaps it may take some coaxing. It can be hard to rest if you have a full schedule or a never-ending list of to-do’s. But usually, when we feel overwhelmed, a little rest time is just what we need to recharge and take the reins again. NOW GO HAVE A NAP!
The truth of the matter is – we all have bad days. And you know what, without them, we would never realize the good ones. All we can do is take them as they come and do our best to channel our inner peace. To seek out elements in the day that bring us comfort.

I hope you’ve found this helpful, and that your bad days are few and far between!

Until next time 😊
