Suntastic Sunflowers

Suntastic Sunflowers

One of our favourite things about August is the beautiful blooms that come with it. Sunflowers will forever signify the bittersweet transition of summer into fall, with their tall stature and bright faces reminding us to soak up as much of that summer sunshine as we can!

Something we find fascinating about Sunflowers is that they display a behaviour called heliotropism. Where the flower buds and young blossoms will face east in the morning and follow the sun as the earth moves during the day- solar tracking!

Native to North America, sunflowers were cultivated as far back as 3000 BCE when they were developed for food, medicine, dye, and oil. Plus, they have a history of healing, in Mexico, the flowers were thought to soothe chest pain. Native American tribes agreed with the plant’s curing properties, The Cherokee utilized an infusion of sunflower leaves to treat kidneys while the Dakota brought it out to soothe chest pain and pulmonary troubles.

Cherished for their beauty, Suntastic Sunflowers are striking ornamental annuals grown for their colourful summer and fall blooms. Adored for their dwarf stature - and bright golden petals and chocolate brown centres. Suntastic Sunflowers are perfect as a cheery long-blooming potted plant or window box accent or maybe to add a burst of colour to a sunny garden bed.
