This week we’re talking about a houseplant with origins in Madagascar and other Indian Ocean islands! Dracaena; a fairly simple to care for air purifying houseplant known for its colourful foliage and upright form.
With a plant name that comes from the ancient Greek word “drakaina” or “female dragon” – tokened by its red resin in its stems that were compared to that of dragon blood. A resin that was used for toothpaste, dyes and medicines in the past and is still used for varnish and photoengraving today. You may have also heard a Dracaena be called the Song of India plant, Dragon tree or Corn plant depending on the variety.
Comprised of about 40 different species, including Dracaena Massangeana, Dracaena Marginata, and Dracaena Reflexa (the most popular) to name a few, they come from the asparagus plant family “Asparagaceae”.
With their thick stems that we refer to as canes and their stunning dramatic foliage- add it to any space for the perfect splash of life!
CARE & MAINTENANCE FOR DRACAENA:
Light: Bright, indirect light
Water: Allow soil to dry slightly between watering, then water thoroughly. Ensure adequate drainage.
Fertilizer: Water-soluble 20-20-20 during the growing season. Do not fertilize during the winter months
Maintenance: Thrives in high humidity (mist if indoors). Brown tips indicate over-watering or too much fluoride. Allow water to sit overnight before watering or use distilled water. Prune stem if branching is desired. Great at removing chemicals in the air (NASA)
Growth: Up to 6′ tall / 24-36″ wide
