Although we don’t have the luxury of year-round tropical weather here in Windsor and Essex County, incorporating tropical plants in the garden is the next best thing, as they allow us to feel like we can have a little tropical stay-cation in our very own backyards!
An Anna’s favourite, the Dipladenia is a tropical plant, known for its beautiful Summer colours! Vibrant red, pink or white trumpet-like flowers and pointed, glossy, deep green foliage make the Dipladenia the perfect shrub-like annual for your landscape and are also available in a swaying hanging basket!
When it comes time to choosing the perfect location for your Dipladenia, you will want to find a full sun or partial shade spot, ideally being exposed to six to eight hours of sunlight per day. Morning and late afternoon sun are best, provided the Dipladenia has some sun-protection during midday.
The steady supply of blooms makes Dipladenia an excellent pop of colour for sunny decks, patios and balconies! Happiest in containers, landscape beds or borders, they will attract a variety of pollinators such as hummingbirds and bees, as the tubular flowers are a sign that the Dipladenia offers an abundant supply of nectar.
Known to be a fairly low-maintenance plant, you’ll want to make sure that you plant Dipladenia in well-drained soil. Relatively drought tolerant, they are an excellent pick for busy or forgetful gardeners who have the tendency to miss watering’s- we’ve found many of our customers who live on the water or own cottages have great luck when choosing these plants!
Have the tendency to over love/water your plants? You will want to be very careful with your Dipladenia as overwatering will cause the tuberous roots to suffocate and cause root rot. Be sure to allow your plant to dry out between watering as the roots will manage on low water efficiently.
Fertilize your Dipladenia with a balanced 20-20-20 water-soluble solution every three or four weeks during the growing season to encourage blooms. Overwinter indoors once nighttime temperatures drop below 65 F/18 C and suspend fertilizer for the Winter.
Dipladenia does not require deadheading as they are a self-cleaner, however, you can cut back the tips of the plants in early Spring or late Winter to encourage bushier growth.
