Abeego: Beeswax Food Wrap

Abeego: Beeswax Food Wrap

It’s that time of year, where everyone is spending a lot of time in the kitchen preparing to host or head out for a get together with some kind of serving dish in hand! That is why this week we wanted to share a little bit about Abeego!

Abeego is a reusable beeswax food wrap that breathes! What does that mean? Well, conventional plastic wrap, the one that we’ve all grown up with as a staple item on our grocery list- actually doesn’t allow your food to breathe, instead, it creates moisture from the trapped emitted gases. Alternatively, beeswax allows the gas to naturally emit through the fibres of its fabric, protecting the food and preserving it longer!

Founded in Victoria, British Columbia in 2018, Toni Desrosiers created Abeego on two core principals: Firstly, it’s logical. It breathes. If living food needed to be wrapped in an airtight wrap, the rind, peel or skin would be airtight. It’s not. Secondly, it’s inspirational. It looks good, feels good, smells good and fosters a healthier relationship with food.

Abeego is made with a formula of all-natural ingredients: beeswax, tree resin, jojoba oil, and infused into a hemp and organic cotton cloth. Every ingredient used comes from the earth and will return to it without a trace. This recipe is something Abeego chose to share as the goal is to not only sell Abeego but for plastic wrap to become extinct. Toni has hopes that the generations to come will never be exposed to plastic baggies or plastic wrap and instead beeswax food wrap will be the new go-to, in every home.

Abeego is a zero-waste company, where “waste” is actually a resource- creating twist ties and fire starters with all excess.

So how do you use Abeego?

  1. Simply squeeze Abeego around anything and everything! It’s self-adhesive and takes any shape you need.
  2. When you’re done with it, wash it with cold water, the colder the better and a little eco-friendly dish soap and a gentle cloth. Once clean, fold and put away in a place where it won’t be affected by heat.
  3. Re-use- Abeego can last up to a year or longer. If you find it is worn, or no longer sticks it is ready to be composted or used as a firestarter for campfires, BBQs or wood stoves.

Be the kitchen hero the next time you’re asked to bring a little something to a get-together. Wrap your dish in Abeego and leave it behind! Your friend or family member won’t want to go back to plastic wrap ever again! Save the food while you take steps towards saving the earth! Every little bit helps!
