Frightful Eats & Treats to get you in the Halloween Spirit!

With Halloween approaching quickly, we’ve been busy decorating the house and preparing for a frightfully fantastic holiday. Adding festive food and drinks is a sure way to bring excitement to any holiday, and Halloween is no different. Whether you’re attending a spooktacular soiree and needing a dish to bring, searching for dinner or breakfast options at home, or looking for simple ways to add Halloween creations to the kids lunchpails, I’ve rounded up some easy treats that are fun & tasty, and will make even the pickiest ghouls and goblins happy!

Get the meals themed from the get-go with a pumpkin-y delicious breakfast! We saved the guts from our pumpkin carving and put them to good use for this recipe.

Pumpkin Pancakes

These pancakes use pumpkin spice and pumpkin puree for added goodness, they are loaded with flavour! The recipe doesn’t call for any sugar either, which is a big plus. Instead of drizzling them with syrup, we topped the flapjacks with Voisin’s maple cinnamon butter and it was amazing! A perfect combination. The kids gobbled them up in no time, and I was happy to start their day with the extra kick of fiber from the pumpkin. 🎃

Spiced Pumpkin Pancakes
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ cups milk or buttermilk (plus more as needed)
  • ¾ cups pumpkin puree
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 tsp melted butter
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
Simply mix the dry ingredients and wet ingredients separately, then whisk together and pan fry over medium low heat. Enjoy!

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Monsters!

Snyder's mini Pretzels $4.99

This is a classic Halloween snack that has passed the test of time, and for good reason – they are so easy to make, look incredible on a dessert board or in a lunchpail, and no one can resist the salty and sweet combination. Simply melt down some white chocolate chips in a double boiler, or in the microwave, mix in some food colouring and dip in your pretzels, add some candy eyes, and you are set!  I feel the need to warn you though, white chocolate burns much quicker than darker chocolate. Be sure to microwave at low heat (I used level 3) and stir every 20 seconds.

These are a big hit in the kid’s lunches. My littles ones eyes popped out of their sockets when they came home to this special treat!

Graveyard Nacho Dip

Because nacho dip is ALWAYS a crowd pleaser! In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever been to a party where there was nacho dip leftover. Everyone has their own take on this dish, I don’t need to supply a recipe. But the fun is in the garnish. Decorating this dip with a sprinkle of lettuce over the cheese to give a grass-like appearance, and adding toasted tombstone shaped tortillas really make this a spooktacular appetizer! This picture is from Better Homes & Garden, but you better believe I'll be making this at the next Halloween party I attend!

‘Hands Down’ Best Ever Cider!

Honeycrisp apples $7/basket | Delhaven cider $8.50/2L or $10.50/4L

If you haven’t tried Delhaven apple cider yet, you are seriously missing out. It is sooo delicious! It honestly doesn’t need any fussing to make it taste any better. But, serving it in a bowl with fruit garnish and some hand shaped ice (made from disposable gloves) certainly brings it to the next level! The presentation of this is so fun! Often times, there is just way too much food at parties and pot lucks, bringing a drink is a fun alternative and easy to pull off if you have a busy schedule.

Pumpkin Drink Vessel

Large pumpkin $9 (on sale for additional 50% off) | Custom bow - prices vary

This brilliant hack has been circulating the internet, and I can’t help but jump on board. It is just too cute. Sure, signature cocktails are fun if you’re throwing a party, but honestly, who has time for that?! Simply buy a box of wine or cocktail water from the LCBO remove it from the box and insert it into a pumpkin! The only work required is carving out a hole for the dispenser. I love this so much!

Halloween themed food adds a touch of whimsy and excitement to the holiday celebrations and allows us to embrace the spooky season in a deliciously frightful way. Whether you’re hosting a haunted Halloween house party, or looking for eerie treats to enjoy at home, my hope is that this list takes some of the think work from your planning! 🎃👻🍬
