The Calathea roseopicta, also known as a Calathea Medallion or rose-painted prayer plant, is a tropical plant native to Brazil. Calathea and the closely related Maranta grow beautifully ornate foliage. Following their circadian rhythm, Calatheas move and open their leaves up towards the sun throughout the day to maximize light intake and return to a resting position at night. Medallion plants come in different colours and patterns but can be largely characterized by the dark red beneath the leaves and the white or pink “painted” marks on top of the leaves.
Light: medium to bright, indirect light and is sensitive to direct sunlight.
Water: The Calathea prefer to be moist but not wet or saturated. From our experience, it is easy to over water plants so make sure to feel the dirt by dipping your finger 2 - 3 inches in the soil. Yellow leaves are a sign of overwater so if you see them, simply scale down the amount of water.
Temperature: Similar to humans, plants like the Calathea prefer temperatures of 65⁰ to 85⁰.
Fertilizer: A very light feeder, apply a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength once every 1 - 3 months.
Growth: 12-30" tall/12-24" wide
